This four-story, 75,000 sf building serves as an assisted living community in Old Town Alexandria, VA. The project includes 90 residential units, including 25 memory care units, recreation areas, common areas, an entertainment room, a commercial kitchen, a rooftop terrace, and 30,000 sf of below grade parking. The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver® certification.

Vanderweil provided sustainable design services, including LEED and Fitwel. Approaching design holistically, the project team achieved environmental goals, while also focusing on occupant wellbeing. Balancing efficiency with aesthetics, the team designed a building that harmonizes with Old Town Alexandria’s architecture while still yielding an energy reduction of over 25% from the LEED v4 baseline.

Sustainable features include a vegetated roof and low flow/flush fixtures that save 640,000 gallons of water annually. For occupant wellbeing, a special focus was placed on establishing and maintaining acoustic and thermal comfort, and emphasizing views of nature for human delight.
