The Life Laboratory is a new two-story “incubator”, 15,000 sf lab comprised of wet lab space with associated equipment areas, offices, and support spaces such as restrooms, a kitchen, lobby and back of house area.
The lab is modular in nature, and most of the interior was fabricated off-site within the modules, with final connections made on-site upon delivery and installation of the modular units.
The flexible lab space is intended to provide the infrastructure and environment for post-graduate students and small companies to establish themselves in the Greater Boston Area. Its location, on Western Ave, was chosen to give visibility to both HBS and the tenants to the community. An important design goal was for the layout to be open and encourage communication between individuals of differing tenants/companies.
The space boasts both exposed and concealed MEPs in the front-of-house spaces to give a fine finished look in key areas and an exposed lab-feel to other areas.
Vanderweil provided MEP engineering services for the design and construction of the facility.
