Vanderweil Power Group was the Engineer of the Record and provided engineering and detailed design for this 1,000 VDC, 34.5 kV, 100 MW / 400 MWh indoor Li-ion battery storage system including design for electrical, HVAC, and fire protection systems.
Site power distribution is at 34.5 kV utilizing GIS switchgear in prefabricated load centers. The system is connected with the grid at 230 kV.
The 100 MW of battery storage is distributed in three buildings, using blocks of 3 MW batteries stepped up to 34.5 kV for site distribution and step up to the interconnection at 230 kV. The facility interconnects to SCE through re-purposed feeds from a decommissioned fossil fuel unit.
The project is the recipient of the US Edison Award via the Edison Electric Institute and Best Project for Southern California, Industrial/Energy Category via ENR.
