The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Center will be the first in the world to simultaneously devote itself to scientific research and treatment of pancreatic cancer, that has one of the lowest therapeutic success rates.

The center is being built on a plot of land next to the foundation. Ten years after the opening of the “Champalimaud Center for the Unknown,” the Champalimaud Foundation joins efforts with Mauricio and Charlotte Botton, who contributed 50 million euros to the construction of the center. This is “the first time a foreign family entrusts to a Portuguese philanthropic institution” [this type of responsibility], notes the Champalimaud Foundation.

While designing this new hospital, it was important that this structure have an environment which would make the patient, as well as the relatives, feel calm and relaxed. Plants, water, ample sunlight, and ocean views are some of the features that make this possible.

An international team of architects and engineers worked closely with the local professionals to bring to bear the latest technology and design philosophy, while meeting both national and local requirements to fulfill the project.
