A new $105 million, 107,000 sf, three-story lab and office building to house the City of San Francisco Police Department’s Traffic Company Division & Forensic Services Division (TC&FSD). The motorcycle police units and forensics teams within the TC&FSD play crucial roles in emergency and disaster events, and their operations were housed in a seismically deficient building.
Relocating these services into a single dependable and safe building would ensure the continuity of daily and emergency services. The facility was designed to include a Crime Scene Investigation unit with vehicle exam bays, media evidence unit, and forensic imaging; a Forensic Services Unit with DNA prep and screening labs; a firearms analysis and test firing range; and a controlled substances and breath / blood alcohol labs.
Facilities for the Traffic Company Unit included a fleet area for motorcycle parking and maintenance / repairs. Additionally, it provides a briefing room; a body-worn camera unit, a fitness center, locker rooms, multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen, conference rooms, and break areas.
Vanderweil provided MEP/FP engineering and sustainability consulting services for the new facility. The critical mechanical and electrical systems are designed with N+1 redundancy for reliable service in the event of failure or service outage. The new TC&FSD facility is required to meet the City’s requirements for LEED Gold.
