The Joint Health Sciences Center is a new 100,000 sf health sciences research building for four institutions: Rutgers University, Rowan University, Camden County College, and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. The building includes research, computational, and simulation laboratories as well as expandable conference rooms with multi-media functionality to promote public/private collaborative research and business development efforts in a central hub.

Vanderweil provided MEP engineering services including: high performance, energy efficient air handling systems with de-coupled induction air units for research and support activities, including a separate, dedicated system for a small animal vivarium; a new fume hood exhaust system with glycol run-around energy recovery; and heat wheel energy recovery technology for general exhaust systems serving open laboratories.

HVAC, hot water boilers, VFD pumping stations, and additional equipment were housed within a mechanical penthouse. The HVAC design utilized multiple sustainable design strategies including “neutral” air combined with active induction units (chilled beams) to maximize cooling and heating energy efficiency.
