The new Health l Science l Technology (HST) building is a 194,000 sf academic interdisciplinary lab facility focused on human health research. It was designed with a focus on building occupant wellness and energy efficiency, earning Fitwel Three Stars and LEED Gold.
The new building features a diverse range of lab space for chemistry, biology, and materials science. These are complimented by core data visualization and imaging labs. The HST building also hosts the administrative operations of the University’s new College of Health with flexible open-office clusters that encourage movement and communication.
Vanderweil provided MEP/FP engineering, lighting, security, IT, energy modeling, and sustainability consulting services. Sustainable MEP system highlights include a neutral temperature supply air dedicated outside air system to reduce reheat energy consumption, chilled beams, perimeter radiant heat, daylight and circadian lighting control, and a reclaimed rainwater system serving irrigation and toilet flushing.
The project was recognized with Fitwel’s Best Building Health Award as well as with multiple AEI Professional Project Awards: an Award of Excellence in Mechanical Systems Design and four Awards of Merit (A/E Integration, Construction Management & Methods, Structural System Design, and Lighting System Design).
