Session E68

John Saad (Vanderweil), Louis Faassen (Baystate Health), Kurt Rockstroh (Steffian Bradley), and Kristen Waltz (Steffian Bradley) to present: "Hospital of the Future: Lessons Learned from a 10-Year Expansion Project."

In 2007, Baystate Medical Center embarked on its “Hospital of the Future” project. The project, which has completed three phases and fit out 475,000 square feet of its 643,000 square feet of new space, was multifaceted. This multidisciplinary team will share their knowledge and unique perspectives gained from a 10-year phased expansion project on an acute care campus. Explore how this team was able to adjust to the shift in project delivery methodologies between three major construction phases including multiple early-stage enabling projects. Presenters will look back at their collaborative design and planning process and share their biggest takeaways that led to successful completion.

  • Explore the range and advantages of design and delivery methodologies used during each phase of the project.
  • Hear how the team used a collaborative process to plan for disruption by identifying issues, communicating considerations, scheduling solutions, and developing carefully phased strategies.
  • Consider the unusual shell building strategy and its significant advantages and long-term benefits.
  • Outline the design and construction considerations for long-term flexibility.
